Portraits

The model spaces for Reading Studios are not cold, stiff institutions like libraries are sometimes perceived to be. Instead, they are inviting, warm places with a distinctly homely atmosphere. One of the Ukrainian spaces in Cardiff (UK) felt especially welcoming—more like a living room than a public venue.

Hanging on the walls above the soft armchairs were portraits of ancestors—prominent figures of Ukrainian literature. The wise, thoughtful eyes of writers and poets contemplated the viewer with subtle smiles. Set in wooden frames of different sizes, the portraits resembled family keepsakes collected across different times and eras.

The two women who curated the images, Mrs. Olena and Ms. Anastasia, agreed to share the files so that other ukrainian readers can decorate the walls of their homes or community centers.
