Lina Kostenko
Lina Kostenko – Ukrainian poet, prose writer, and prominent cultural figure.
Lina Vasylivna Kostenko was born on March 19, 1930, in the town of Rzhyshchiv, Kyiv region. She is one of the leading representatives of the Ukrainian “Sixtiers” – a movement of writers and artists of the 1960s who sought to renew culture, defend freedom of speech, and preserve national identity under Soviet censorship.

Her writing combines deep philosophical reflection, lyricism, and attention to historical memory. Among her most notable works are the poetry collections On the Banks of the Eternal River, Marusia Churai (a novel in verse that has become a classic of modern Ukrainian literature), Berestechko, and the prose novel Notes of a Ukrainian Madman.
During the Soviet period, her books were repeatedly banned and withdrawn from publication. Nevertheless, Kostenko remained true to her word and convictions. She is the recipient of numerous literary awards, including the Shevchenko National Prize of Ukraine.
Today, Lina Kostenko rarely appears in public, yet her work continues to inspire new generations. She is regarded as a symbol of moral integrity and the spiritual strength of Ukrainian culture.

Ліна Василівна Костенко народилася 19 березня 1930 року в місті Ржищів на Київщині. Вона належить до угрупування українських «шістдесятників» – митців, які в 1960-х роках прагнули оновити культуру, відстояти свободу слова й зберегти національну ідентичність у часи радянської цензури.
Її творчість поєднує глибокі філософські роздуми, ліричність і увагу до історичної пам’яті. Серед найбільш знаних творів – поетичні збірки «Над берегами вічної ріки», «Маруся Чурай» (роман у віршах, що став класикою сучасної української літератури), «Берестечко», а також роман «Записки українського самашедшого».
У радянські часи її книги неодноразово забороняли та вилучали з друку, однак Костенко зберігала власну позицію і залишалася вірною своєму слову. Вона є лауреаткою численних літературних відзнак, зокрема, Національної премії України імені Тараса Шевченка.
Сьогодні Ліна Костенко рідко з’являється на публіці, проте її творчість і далі надихає нові покоління, а сама вона залишається символом моральної стійкості та духовної сили української культури.

Indeed, those who have wings don't need the ground.
If there is no land, there will be a sky.
If there is no field, there will be freedom.
If there is no love, there will be clouds.
That might be about the life of a bird …
But what about people? How do they live?
They live on the ground, not able to fly.
But they have wings. They do have wings!
These wings aren't made of feathers and fluff.
But made of honour, virtue, and trust.
Some wings are made of faithfulness in love.
Others of eternal enthusiasm.
Somebody flies with the work dedication.
Somebody when taking care of others.
There are wings of songs or hope.
Either poetry or dream.
It seems that people cannot fly …
But they have wings. They do have wings!
